2012 wish list
With 2011 drawing to a close, here’s a short wish list for 2012:
- That this year’s record 435+ rhino poachings is the highest number South Africa sees;
- That South Africa makes good on its United Nations climate change talks presidency, which lasts to the end of 2012 when the next Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change takes place in Qatar. There is much to do if we are to see all countries and negotiating blocs stick to the so-called Durban platform;
- That the Department of Water Affairs fills its vacancies and holds mines and heavy industry (and indeed everyone) to using South Africa’s water responsibly;
- That no endangered species in South Africa and across the world dies out in 2012 (probably a vain hope, but …)
- That South Africa successfully prosecutes those arrested for environmental crimes;
- That those who have to decide on whether to exploit South Africa’s shale gas resources really apply their minds, and err on the side of caution;
- That those who have to decide on whether to exploit any of South Africa’s resources and reserves really apply their minds, and err on the side of caution;
- That the number of people recycling, harvesting water, growing their own veggies and fruit and so on grows;
- That more children are able to play and grow safely and happily;
- And that everyone has a safe and happy 2012 in which economic growth outpaces expectations!
Best wishes,
SUE

Great article. Your wish list is every caring person’s dream. We work towards a goal of an earthly Utopia. Human nature interferes because of self interest, which is why not all at the conference are co-operative in those aims which would benefit all
