Maelstrom
It was George Orwell who said “During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act”.
Madonsela’s stance in insisting on a full, frank and proper review of the scandal of the two police headquarter buildings is such a revolutionary act. It lays bare the “Zulu-fication” of the ANC under Zuma and his need for personal political support at any cost to the country.
We are clearly going through particularly precarious times and our Government and President in particular, are showing no signs of taking these criminal shortcomings seriously.
At the recent Grahamstown Thinkfest, an event well worth attending, it seems that Clem Sunter has now taken off the table all thoughts of a “High Road” scenario; that the best we can now hope for is a low growth muddle through, but that far more scary the low road scenario would see us heading for somewhere like Somalia and the middle towards something akin to Zimbabwe, and that in the light of what we are presently seeing with corruption and maladministration rampant throughout all aspects of Government including the police and security echelons, could anyone else peering into their crystal ball portend anything rosier? Scary times indeed.
What has gone so seriously wrong?
The answer lies without and within; globally, the dark recessionary clouds are again gathering ominously and at home our Government dithers, fails to act and tiptoes around Malema and corruption; thus these twin spectres of global dark clouds and the decisions, and often non-decisions and policies here at home. It is not alarmist to say that the fabric of our society and the mode of our Governance are in danger of being re-shaped, not as a result of rational, parliamentary debate but according to the needs and whims of forces, beneath the surface, operating in shady ways and driven by the needs to entrench power bases of politicians.
So Mr President, we are still waiting; urgent action is now very overdue.
Should we read your inability to act as you being complicit in much of the corruption? What other reasons can there be for your clear unwillingness to act even though clear prima facie cases has been made?
Time perhaps for not only an Economic Codesa but also a Political Codesa too, fully empowered to examine all of the issues?
If you won’t act, perhaps We, the People, must now act.
