Cabbage patch at Soccer City is unacceptable
WASN’T the pitch at Soccer City the other day the most hideous cabbage patch you have ever seen?
Hell, the grazing hills in the Eastern Cape village of Tsomo Mission are opulent in comparison to the disaster that greeted us when Kaizer Chiefs hosted Orlando Pirates on Saturday afternoon.
How on earth could one of the biggest matches in the world be played on a surface that can politely be described as a national embarrassment?
The pitch was removed from the World Cup stadium to accommodate a contraption known as “the four-legged claw”, which covered almost half the surface during the U2 concert last month.
They’ve been scrambling since, trying to get it ready for the Soweto Derby at the weekend.
And as it turned out, they couldn’t get it right and Soccer City was a disaster.
This match is watched all over the world and foreign viewers must have been stunned when they saw how rapidly a stadium that hosted the opening match and the final of the 2010 Soccer World Cup only a few months ago had deteriorated.
Soccer has played second fiddle to rugby for years as the best facilities were run by the unionin all the provinces. There were times when rugby gave soccer the middle finger and the Premier Soccer League frantically searched for venues in the 11th hour.s
There is now an abundance of facilities after the World Cup but it seems soccer is still the biggest loser.
We now have to contend with rock concerts and it seems they take first preference over what is after all the biggest sport in the country.
Totally unacceptable.
