Rugby IQ
Isn’t it a sad state of affairs when the All Blacks assistant coach makes headlines for calling Springbok coach Peter de Villiers intelligent?
And how condescending?
“Peter de Villiers is an intelligent rugby man…” Well we would all hope so considering he has been coaching one of the biggest brands in world rugby for three years. (Or are the people who appointed him a bit slow? Another debate for another day)
De Villiers has rightly earned the wrath and laughter of rugby fans for his gafs. Some of his comments transcend the bizarre. Bible analogies are one thing but defending eye gouging is another. Tactical naivety is another altogether.
But that has nothing to do with his IQ, it has everything to do with his quirkiness, mannerisms, second language translations, stubbornness and insecurities magnified by a mainstream media that has questioned him from day one.
The fact that a foreign coach has to confirm his intelligence is as condescending as it gets – compounded by the fact it is read all over the world. Let’s wait for the weekend and hopefully the debate will shift from IQ to Rugby IQ.
Now that’s a debate worth having. I, and everyone else who cares, could write four pages on the type of coach we need in SA after the World Cup.
However we have 20-odd days left until the All Blacks’ four-yearly choke. We have no choice but to support De Villiers, or Div, or Divvy or P Divvy.
