Cape Town has largest Twitter usage in SA (The story of early adopters)
A report released earlier this year by Fuseware, a social media research company shows that Cape Town has the largest number of Twitter users in SA. The report also highlights that most of SA tweets on Tuesdays and the least popular day to tweet is Sunday.
According to Fuseware CE, Mike Wronski, the simple fact that Cape Town is a tourist city could explain the popularity of Twitter. “Cape Town is a tourist-oriented international city, and has a large population of “early adopters” that are willing to try new networks and platforms. Johannesburg can be described as more corporate and traditional, and has thus seen a slightly slower uptake of this social media channel”.
On one of the more peculiar findings on the report, most people in SA seem to Tweet on Tuesdays. Wronski says that there appears to be no clear explanation of this trend but it does indicate that people are generally less productive on Tuesdays. “We have verified our data with another large social network in South Africa, whose peak traffic also occurs on a Tuesday. We can only come to the conclusion that people are simply less productive at work on Tuesdays, and would rather use some of the time to access Twitter,” said Wronski.
The report also indicated that SA Twitter users generally Tweet at night. Wronski says this tendency could be because of that “people love talking about what happened during their day,”
“We can say that most Twitter users love talking about what happened during their day, and their upcoming plans. Since about 40% of the population access Twitter using their cell phones, it allows them to post a quick update summarizing the events of their day, or talking about an upcoming event,” Wronski concluded.
